Labradorite: the Magician's Stone

Labradorite is not as well known as rose quartz or amethyst, but its energy is as strikingly ethereal. The closest comparison would be a combination of high-frequency, metaphysically oriented amethyst, powerful obsidian, and interdimensional smoky quartz.

Physically, labradorite ranges from olive green, through charcoal grays and muddy fawns, to almost black, but  labradorite usually contains distinctive iridescent fires that flash and blaze in the light. This property has its own name, labradoresence. Though named for Labrador, Canada, labradorite is also found in Finland, Norway, and several other regions. (Source: Wikipedia)

Since before recorded history, this stone has been valued for its magical flashing colors, so reminiscent of the Northern Lights - the physical manifestation of magic, mystery, and the other worlds - and has longstanding associations with shamanism. Labradorite is the magician’s stone, a powerful uplicking of colored fires of vision and inspiration in the darkness, whether it be the darkness of divine silence, the source of all creation - or the darkness of an unquestioned and mundane life.

Labradorite is an essential tool for metaphysical workers, a soothing and grounding base flashing with transcendence and transformation. It calms the frantic heart, regulates the systems of the body, and stabilizes even the most intense spiritual growth and change. It also relieves frustration and anger during our magical “ebb times”, rooting us in our true power and reminding us that the magic is always there, integral to the human experience and not denied to us. Curiously, I find that traditionally the stone is used to relieve menstrual pain, comforting us during what is for many women an other type of energy ebb.

I will end this post by encouraging you to touch stones (metaphysical shops often have trays of crystals for sale, or you may have a collection of your own already), and react to them psychically. Take time to examine the flashes in the dull-looking labradorite; let you mind and heart be open to magic’s whispering.

Lots of Love,
