The Humble Grounding Stones

We often associate stone and crystal healing with sparkling amethyst, clear quartz, and sea-green aventurine - with the heart chakra’s compassion and intuition up through the vision and abilities of the crystal and indigo adepts. But those of us who have experienced the whirlwind of spiritual awakening, or the emotional longings and mental mazes of a seeker’s daily life, understand that power, grounding, physicality and vitality, are unrefined-seeming but necessary components of adept-hood here on Earth. As the foundation is to the building, the lower chakras are to the higher.

The lower-chakra stones have simple, earthy, and lusty/appetitive qualities. These qualities are not to be undervalued, much less repressed or shunned. It certainly appropriate to focus on that which is “pure”, “high-vibration”, and, especially “loving” in aspects of our spiritual practice – but the basis of magical ability and, more importantly, spiritual evolution – is balance among the energy centers, not specialized development of one or two. Without strengthening the foundation, how many stories can we add to the roof?

In fact, many a hungry spiritual seeker, chasing flashes of divine love and sparkles of clarity, pursues higher and more refined practices to little avail, when some good solid root-grounding might anchor the divine in the experience like lightning to earth. Don’t consider these plain, dark, stones as the vitamins of the crystal world – see the Void of Infinite Potential in their darkness. They are the fairy dressed as a beggar-woman; they give gifts magical and unexpected.
