Choosing an Amulet is a Magic Spell

Good evening!

Tonight we’ll be chatting about choosing the right magic amulet for yourself. I’ve described the jewelry I create, some of it with gentle and multitudinous intentions, other with specific applications, in my wide and narrow bandwidth amulet posts.

This post will be a guide to selecting a piece for yourself.

There are two ways to choose a piece: by instinct and by thought. Instinct is choosing the most appealing piece, be it the most delicate, the most dangerous, or the most comfortably fitting. Instinct is not blind, but incredibly far-seeing, useful, and healing. Our favorite colors or power colors often reflect our aura; a lust for a new color usually provides the exact color therapy we needs at that time. Our favorite symbols, whether water drops, ravens, hearts, or moons, consciously or unconsciously connect us to other-dimensional power sources and reinforce our relationships with unseen beings. We continuously live the magical lives of ourselves as sorcerers/sorceresses.

Druidic and shamanic schools of thought, among others, teach us about the Otherworlds -  higher and lower planes of existence, and that plane of magical existence that mirrors and is mirrored by our commonly agreed-upon waking life: the Middle World, the fluid and more obviously archetypical basis underlying our surface reality. (Though I speak of waking life as a single world shared by all humans when not explicitly exploring alternate realms, this middle plane is in fact diverse enough to be quite lacy around the edges, the realities of some people so far departed from the realities of others that they are probably entirely invisible to each other.) This Middle World in which our actions and encounters enjoy a symbolic existence is directly informing our instinctive choices with the clarity of a seer. As we purchase a unicorn charm, our Middle World self summons a unicorn to ride. Also like a seer, this self is less bound to the arrow of time, and able to provide for future events in ways we are not.

Instinct, therefore, is not a blind collection of childhood impressions and Freudian troubles, nor the “whim of personality”, but an incredibly informed Magical Self. One curious result is that many people choose an amulet, for example one for communicating with nature spirits, because it instinctively appeals to them, and shortly AFTERWARD they find themselves moving to a sacred mountain rich with nature spirits. The decision is being made by an aspect of the Self outside of time.

This may make the intellectual choice of amulet sound a little shabby. Actually, neither method is superior. If we suffer from bad temper and skin rashes in the summer, and choose a soothing Water Garden bracelet explicitly because we know one of the included gemstones, amazonite, has cooling and healing properties, we are using exactly the same technique in reverse. Rather than the Magical Self informing us from a realm outside time, we are painting a stroke in the Otherworld. “Imagination” means to picture something, but I like it to think of it as “creating something by means of magic.” When we “see” the power of the amazonite, the soothing qualities of the bracelet, and its power in our mind’s eye - mentally imbuing the physical object with these qualities, reinforced by the colors, design, and the subtler imprints of the artist’s intention - we are casting a spell through symbol and thought. We are giving a conjunction of charmed objects life and activation and weaving that result into our matrix of experience.

So take up an amulet, whether it appeals to you by instinct, or whether you choose it for specific qualities or a name that connects to your desires, and know there is no wrong choice. The processes described above relate not only to magic amulets, but to produce, packaged foods, desk accessories, small appliances, and most other consumer goods, so enjoy your daily spell-work!
